New Boy Scout Uniform

The BSA Centennial Uniform is on its way!The word is out! Design for the new boy scout uniform comes out in August, 2008. The colors are pretty much the same so new uniform pieces can be transitioned as old ones are outgrown. A big difference is red shoulder loops and unit numbers are now forest green. The uniform is being promoted as more versatile and wearable in the field instead of just for meetings.I do think the new boy scout baseball-style cap is a big improvement. The switchbacks pants are staying around. See BSAUniforms.org for details or this PDF file.

I find the new uniform drab and disapointing. To change the color of the troop numbers after decades is about as smart as the New Coke disaster. This uniform say to me I am ashamed to be seen at a distance hide me.
And the pocket on the sleeve will be another problem if its filled with its intended cargo an I-Pod. technolgy should be embrassed but not when it becomes a python embrasse on our Scouts attention.
Uniforms are to make everyone in a group equal and uniforms such as the Boy Scout uniform carry tradition down through generations of Scouts. This is generally by staying the same. This unifrom fails. Changing the uniform for the sake of changeis a failure.

I disagree with Mr. Nash...change is inevitable. The uniforms were designed to be more durable and to handle more rough stuff (outdoor activities, while proudly displaying the emblems of the scouting organization. Clothing keeps the scout warm, the person in the uniform makes the Scout. Our devotion as a service organization requires us to be in uniform in the public. This new uniform will ensure that we can present ourselves in public professionally while being able to complete the tasks and "wick" away the weather. Technology changes alot of things. eg. GPS to Compass. We teach both methods. As far as entertainment goes. The boys should be kept to be busy at all hours in activities or outdoor games and if the youth leadership is not directing this then it is up to our Scouters to point them in the right direction. On camping trips a "shake down" is necessary to prevent i pods and games from showing up. This bold new uniform might be a "wake up call" for inflexible older generations of Scouters. As always...Be prepared...and be prepared for the 21st Century!
